Reflecting on the First 100 Days of Our New Papago Park Campus

Written by: Arizona Humane Society
Our new Rob & Melani Walton Papago Park Campus is celebrating its first 100 days of serving the community's pets and people.

It’s been 100 days since we opened the doors to our new Rob & Melani Walton Papago Park Campus. This state-of-the-art facility opened in March of this year, featuring newly expanded medical programs aimed at helping of Arizona’s most vulnerable pets.

In the last 100 days, our Papago Park Campus has cared for more than 7,100 pets, with even more arriving each day. Thanks to our community’s support, here are just a few of the first lives saved in our expanded Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital and specialized ICUs.

Marvin: The Gunshot Wound Pup

Marvin, a 2-year-old Golden Retriever mix, received care in our Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital and a loving Foster Hero’s home in March of this year. He was transferred to our trauma hospital from another shelter after he was reported to be shot in the left hind leg by an unknown perpetrator. Upon examination by our veterinarians, he was found to be in shock, dehydrated and actively bleeding, while x-rays revealed a severe fracture of the limb. After almost two months of treatment, Marvin’s loving Foster Hero decided to make their house his forever home!

6,143 pets have received lifesaving care in our state-of-the-art Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital since opening its doors.

Skyler: Parvovirus Survivor

skyler
When Skyler arrived, he was a tiny puppy who was too weak to stand. At just 2-months-old, he had been diagnosed with the contagious and deadly Parvovirus. With his life hanging in the balance, the veterinary technicians in our Susan & Mark Mulzet Parvo Puppy ICU jumped into action to save his life. Slowly, they nursed the weak puppy back to health until he was back to playing like a puppy should. This incredible transformation marked the first critical save in our Papago Park Campus’ new Parvo ICU.

Our expanded Parvo ICU has cared for 173 dogs and puppies battling this life-threatening and contagious disease this year alone.

Shelia and Kittens: Meowternity Suites Alumni

shelia
One of the first patients cared for in our brand-new Meowternity Suites, Shelia and her tiny kittens were found abandoned in a box outside our South Mountain Campus earlier this year. With nowhere else to turn, the whole family received medical care in our Papago Park Campus’ Meowturnity Suites, a new, specialized unit that gives nursing and expecting cat moms a safe, calm environment to care for their babies. This adorable family is currently receiving care in a Foster Hero home until they are ready for adoption.

272 mama cats and kittens have had a safe place to grow since our brand-new Meowternity Suites opened.

Dubski and Family: Mutternity Suites Graduates

dubski
Dubski and her siblings came to AHS after a Good Samaritan found their mother, Freya, while she was in active labor. The new mother and her seven tiny newborns were one of the first families to utilize the shelter’s Mutternity Suites. Similar to AHS’ Meowternity Suites, this area is a quiet, medically supervised ICU for pregnant and nursing mama dogs until they are cleared to go into a foster home. Dubski, her siblings and their mother are all now in their loving forever homes.

Our expanded Mutternity Suites have given a safe space for 125 mama dogs and puppies this year alone.

Taylor Swift: Orphaned, Underaged Kitten

Taylor Swift the kitten is taking center stage in her forever home thanks to the care she received inside our Bottle Baby ICU and Kitten Nursery. When this tiny kitten arrived at just a week old, she weighed less than a half of a pound. Without a mother to care for her, Taylor and her siblings received round-the-clock care in our Bottle Baby ICU until they were cleared to go into a Foster Hero’s home. She is now singing her heart out with her new forever family.

Since opening, more than 1,298 underaged, orphaned kittens and puppies have received lifesaving care in our expanded Bottle Baby ICU and Kitten Nursery.

These statistics provide an even deeper look into the work accomplished during the first 100 days of our Papago Park Campus.
