In celebration of International Chihuahua Appreciation Day, we're giving you three reasons why you should rescue one for yourself!

While we celebrate Chihuahuas all year long here at the Arizona Humane Society, Tuesday, May 14, is officially International Chihuahua Appreciation Day! We’re using the occasion as an opportunity to brag about the adorably tiny breed and encourage members of our community to consider adopting or fostering a Chihuahua in need.

According to a 2024 U.S. News & World Report article on the most popular dog breeds in the United States, the Chihuahua is the #1 most popular in 21 states, including Arizona. Here’s why we think they make great companions for all kinds of families.

Compact Cuddles

One of the biggest barriers to adopting a pet is living situation, but Chihuahuas are just big enough to happily fit in your small space. Often maxing out at just 6 pounds, these pint-sized pets don’t require much room at all.

They’re Chi-Chi Cheerleaders

Whether you’re temporarily fostering or permanently rescuing, you’ll be the center of your Chihuahua’s world. When they aren’t busy actively seeking out your lap for snuggles, they’ll be at your feet admiring your every move. Opening your home to these pocket-sized pups means you’ll always have someone who looks up to you!

Big Dog, Little Body

Despite their size, Chihuahuas are brave and eager to protect their families; these little ones will remind you of their lion hearts every chance they get. A Chihuahua’s suspicious and protective nature will also help you ensure you’re always aware of your surroundings.
